CORCORAN, Calif. (AP) – Authorities say the death of an inmate at a central California prison is being investigated as a homicide.

The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says 24-year-old Johnny Lopez was found unresponsive Friday in his cell at the state lockup in Corcoran.

Officials say when guards entered the cell, Lopez’s cellmate was standing over him.  Lopez died about a half-hour later.

He entered Corcoran in August 2017 to serve a three-year sentence for burglary.

His cellmate, 34-year-old Eduardo Gutierrez, came to the prison in 2013 to serve 24 years for a voluntary manslaughter conviction.
