Lompoc campground partially evacuated while authorities stop suicidal man

Posted

A campground on Jalama Beach was partially evacuated while deputies negotiated with a suicidal man Saturday night.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office says a 63-year-old man from Arizona was threatening to shoot himself at Jalama Beach Campground around 7 p.m.

Lompoc Police, sheriff’s deputies from Santa Maria and Lompoc, CHP officers, and California State Parks responded to the situation.

The campground was partially evacuated while first responders were attempting to get the man to leave a motor home. He reportedly had a handgun pointed to his head while he made suicidal comments.

After about an hour, the sheriff’s office says deputies were able to talk with the man and de-escalate the situation and eventually allow first responders to take him to a nearby hospital for treatment and a mental health evaluation.

Campers were then allowed back into the area. No injuries were reported.
