Police are investigating a reported sexual assault in San Luis Obispo near Los Palos Drive off of Los Osos Valley Road.
One young woman says she woke up around 5 a.m. Sunday to a stranger in her bedroom. Police say the man likely entered through an unlocked door.
The woman, in her early 20s, said her attacker threatened her with a sharp object before sexually assaulting her.
"Often times people feel very safe in San Luis Obispo and we realize that, but we do emphasize that that becomes a target-rich environment for predators," said Captain Chris Staley of the San Luis Obispo Police Department.
Captain Staley says leaving doors and windows open creates an even bigger window of opportunity for sexual predators and thieves.
"We understand that there is that whole balance of trying to cool down and getting your house to a different temperature but being cognizance that people might be out there who are wanting to take advantage of that."
Police are looking for the man involved in this investigation said to be in his late 30s, 5-5", 150 pounds with dark, short hair, last seen wearing a black T-shirt.
Meanwhile, groups that help victims of sexual assault are now dealing with a backlog. The non-profit "RISE" says 159 people are waiting for counseling. It’s the longest waiting list in 20 years.
