Am inmate at the Santa Barbara County Jail has died as the result of an apparent suicide just hours after being taken into custody.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office says Alexander Ricardo Braid, 45, of Goleta, was arrested Thursday evening after deputies responded to reports of a family disturbance at a home there.
Braid was reportedly booked into jail just after 7 p.m. where sheriff’s officials say he was screened by medical staff, and while uncooperative, placed in a cell alone.
Officials say he was found unresponsive a short time later.
Life-saving measures were performed, according to the sheriff’s office, but Braid was pronounced dead by paramedics just after 8 p.m.
The sheriff’s office says while it is believed Braid committed suicide, a death investigation will be conducted to determine his official cause and manner of death.
He was being held on charges of elder abuse and disrupting a wireless communication device.
