A large part of the Fourth of July tradition has turned into cookouts and dieticians said it is possible to enjoy both a delicious and healthy meal this holiday.
Dr. Steffanie Campbell from the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in Houston has tips for what to choose when heading to the cookouts.
She said instead of getting the usual beef hamburger, grab a turkey or bison burger. These two types of meat are lower in fat but rank high when it comes to flavor. Campbell said to swap out the ketchup and mustard to marinades and rubs in order to save sugar for dessert.
When it comes to sides Campbell said to choose grilled veggies or fruit over the starchy pasta and potato salad options.
She said it is also okay to bring your own healthy dish to share.
