Chipotle closing dozens of stores; SLO, Lompoc locations may also be shuttered

Posted

Chipotle Mexican Grill is closing 65 underperforming locations and may include a location in San Luis Obispo.

According to employees, Chipotle in downtown along Higuera Street and the location in Lompoc will close. Officials with the company would not confirm.

In an email, a representative for the company stated it isn’t "aren’t disclosing specific locations at this time. Please note, though, at the end of Q1 we also announced plans to open around 130 new restaurants this year.":

New CEO Brian Niccol told investors Wednesday that he’d be closing up to 65 locations, but will add a new menu, which may include a happy hour with $2 tacos and a late-night offering, CNBC reported this week.

He also said the company is speeding up mobile and online orders, as well as updating lighting and painting.

Niccol is pulling from the same playbook he used when he led Taco Bell, where he added mobile ordering and payment and changed the slogan to "Live Mas."
