Safety tips for the Oceano Dunes

Posted

The Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is the only state park in California where you can drive your vehicle right on the beach. Park rangers say the dunes gets about one million visitors each year.

Four-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles are recommended on the sand.

Rangers say they’ve seen too many people not driving the speed limit, which is 15-miles-per-hour.

They say if you go ATV riding, always wearing proper gear like a helmet.

Camping and alcohol are allowed on the beach. When having a campfire, make sure to let the fire burn out.

"A lot of times it seems maybe it’s a good idea to cover my fire but it’s actually better to let it burn out because people can see it and kids coming down the beach won’t step on the coals or the flames if it’s not covered, so it’s a safer option to do that," said Ranger Mike Dippel.

The day-use area is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Some of the park is available for overnight camping.
