“Three Californias” initiative qualifies for November ballot

Posted

A billionaire’s plan to split California into three states has qualified for the November ballot.

Venture capitalist Tim Draper’s initiative needed 365,880 validated signatures to qualify. There were 419,362 signatures verified by the Secretary of State’s Office.

Draper’s plan would loop the Central Coast in with Los Angeles in one state simply called "California."

"Northern California" would stretch from the Bay Area to Oregon.

"Southern California" would include San Diego and most of the Central Valley.

According to the Constitution, any initiative to move state boundaries or split states into new ones requires approval from Congress.
