A project to repair the Port San Luis breakwater is getting an additional $4.9 million boost from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Officials say an inspection of the breakwater in 2015 revealed that as much as 1,200 feet of the breakwater between Whalers Island and the head section was badly damaged and in need of repair. A breach could have serious impacts on public safety, fishing, boating, and other activities.
In 2017, the Army Corps allocated $5 million toward the repairs.
They hope to have a contract for the project awarded by fall of 2018.
