Hospital staff took the stand Monday to testify in the ongoing rape and murder trial of Marilyn Pharis.
The Santa Maria woman was beaten and attacked in her home in 2015 and later died from her injuries.
Two men were arrested in connection with the attack. Jose Villagomez has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for the 64-year-old’s death. The trial for Victor Martinez, who has pleaded not guilty, is ongoing.
In a Santa Maria courtroom Monday, hospital staff testified about Pharis’s medical care after the attack, hospital protocol and how she died.
Martinez’s attorney argues that her death was the result of hospital staff.
Pharis suffered from atrial fibrillation (AFib), a heart condition. When she was first brought in, doctors say her rate was stable. However, over the days she was being treated by hospital staff, they say her heart rate was higher than normal and that four difference medications were used to lower it.
One of the doctors testifying Monday stated AFib wouldn’t have caused the blood clot in Pharis’ leg that ultimately led to her death.
The trial resumes Tuesday afternoon.
