UPDATE: Crash on Nojoqui Grade was result of law enforcement pursuit, officials say

UPDATE (8:30 a.m.) – Seven people, including two infants, were injured in a crash on the Nojoqui Grade Tuesday morning that fire officials say was the result of a law enforcement pursuit.

The crash involving four vehicles was reported just before 7:15 a.m. on southbound Highway 101 near Highway 1.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department reports the pursuit stemmed from the Santa Maria area and possibly involved a carjacking suspect.

It was not immediately known how the crash occurred, but pictures released by fire officials show a semi truck, CHP unit and two other vehicles involved.

Fire officials say seven people were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Six of them, including the two infants, were said to have minor injuries and one person was reported to have moderate injuries. It was not immediately known if anyone involved directly with the pursuit was injured.

Fire officials said both suspects had been detained.

The southbound lanes of the highway remained closed at 8:30 a.m. while crews worked to continue the investigation and cleanup the crash.

Drivers were being told to use Highways 246 and 154 as detours.

Additional information regarding the pursuit has not yet been released.

UPDATE (8:07 a.m.) – Caltrans is reporting both southbound lanes of the highway near Buellton are blocked. Drivers are advised to use Highways 246 and 154 as detours.

Fire officials were treating multiple patients said to be involved in a crash on southbound Highway 101 near the Nojoqui Summit Tuesday morning.

It happened just before 7:15 a.m.

Few details were immediately available, but the Santa Barbara County Fire Department is reporting multiple people involved and possibly injured.
