Doctors introduce new teen mental health program in Santa Barbara

Posted

Medical professionals in Santa Barbara are rolling out a new program aimed at addressing mental health issues in teens.

Officials at Cottage Health Hospital in Santa Barbara will introduce the "Headspace" program Friday afternoon.

Doctors say the program is their new model to address mental health issues in children. It involved a coordinated approach with the community and medical staff.

The program was developed in Australia and was recently brought to the Palo Alto community by Dr. Steven Andelsheim who works for the Standord Cetner for Youth Mental health and Wellbeing.

Doctors say kids between the ages of 12 and 18 are most likely to develop serious mental illnesses.

Dr. Andelsheim is inviting residents to a presentation and panel discussion at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Burtness Auditorium at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The free event will focus how Headspace works and how locals can get involved in helping teens.
