Small fire breaks out at homeless encampment in Lompoc Riverbed

Posted

A small vegetation fire was put out at a homeless encampment in the Lompoc Riverbed Monday night and fire officials say these fires are likely to increase as vegetation continues to dry out.

Firefighters responded to reports of a tree on fire shortly before midnight but say heavy vegetation made it difficult for them to access the area.

Additional firefighters were requested and the approximate 30×40-foot fire was put out and the incident over by about 1:45 a.m., officials say.

Firefighters say the encampment was spread out over a large area, but no one was seen in the area. They have not yet determined how the fire started.

This is not the first time a fire has broken out in a homeless encampment within the riverbed.
