Driver charged with manslaughter in death of Santa Barbara pedestrian

A driver who police say hit a 90-year-old pedestrian in Santa Barbara who later died has been charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Lawrence Forgione pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charge on Monday, according to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office.

Santa Barbara police said Forgione hit Gilbert William Ramirez along the the 500 block of State Street the evening of February 24.

Police said at the time that Forgione remained at the scene and was not arrested. Alcohol was also not suspected at the time. 

Ramirez died from his injuries. 

Forgione is due back in court in May.
