The Centers for Disease Control has issued a warning about a potentially deadly fungal infection that’s showing a troubling resistance to drugs.
The superbug is called Candida auris. It was first detected in the United States just three years ago.
“This is an incredibly sticky, tenacious bug,” warns Dr. Scott Lorin of Mount Sinai Brooklyn.
It’s able to worm its way into every imaginable spot in a hospital room.
Since 2016, 587 cases have been reported in 12 states, including California. Most have been in New York.
Doctors say Candida auris, which likely spreads through medical equipment, is no threat to healthy people. It affects patients whose immune systems are compromised, like those with chronic health problems.
Mortality rates for Candida auris range from 20 to 50 percent of those affected.
