UPDATE (12:26 a.m.) - Grover Beach police are releasing additional information regarding an officer-involved shooting Saturday night that left one man dead.
The incident began when officers say they were called to Kautz Chevron at Grand Avenue at 13th Street at around 6:23 p.m. for reports of a person who had shown a gun to someone.
Officers say once on scene, they were not able to find anyone matching the description given but that at around 6:35 p.m., another call came in regarding a man causing a disturbance and throwing rocks at passing cars in the nearby area.
An officer arrived on scene and located a man matching the suspect description, according to police, who say that when the officer got out of his patrol car, the man told him “he had a gun, and would shoot the officer.”
The officer reportedly gave several commands to the man, who was uncooperative and continued telling the officer he had a gun and would shoot him, according to a police press release.
“The man then advanced toward the officer quickly raising his right arm with a replica firearm in his hand. The officer fired his service weapon and struck the male several times,” the press release stated, adding that body cameras on the officer captured the incident.
The man was given immediate medical attention on scene and taken to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to police.
His name will be released once next-of-kin is notified.
The 100 block of South 13th Street between Grand and Lonbranch avenues is expected to remain closed into Sunday morning due to the investigation.
The San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office and the California Department of Justice is assisting the Grover Beach Police Department with the investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information that may help police and has not already spoken with investigators is asked to contact Commander Nelida Aceves at (805) 473-4511 or naceves@gbpd.org.
