MIAMI (AP) — Police say a 68-year-old man has been shot and wounded outside a synagogue near Miami.
Miami-Dade police detective Alvaro Zabaleta tells news outlets someone exited a black car around 6:30 p.m. Sunday and shot the man multiple times in the legs near the entrance to Young Israel of Greater Miami Temple. Temple members identified the victim as Yosef Lifshut. He underwent surgery and is in stable condition.
Zabaleta says it’s too early to determine whether the shooting constituted a hate crime. Officials are seeking the shooter.
Zabaleta told WSVN the car circled the temple several times before the shooting. WPLG reports a volunteer with a medical organization serving Jewish communities was at the synagogue and helped Lifshutz.
Rabbi David Lehrfield told WSVN Lifshutz is a wonderful person beloved at the temple.
