UPDATE (8:45 a.m.) – The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday morning six people had been injured in an early-morning shooting at the dunes.

Sheriff’s officials say multiple 911 calls were made just after midnight reporting shots fired.

“State Parks responded and multiple victims were given initial treatment,” The sheriff’s office said in a press release. “Six individuals were transported to local hospitals to receive further medical treatment.”

No arrests have been made but sheriff’s officials believe this is an isolated incident and there is no current threat to the public.

Detectives remained on scene as of 9 a.m. conducting interviews and processing the scene for evidence.

KSBY’s crew at the scene watched as deputies pulled bullet-like objects out of the sand at the south end of the dunes Sunday morning where a large crowd was reportedly gathered the night before.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (805) 781-4550. Anonymous tips can be made by calling Crime Stoppers at (805) 549 STOP or online here.

UPDATE (6:40 a.m.)  – The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office says no arrests have been made in connection with a weekend shooting at the Oceano Dunes.

Sheriff spokesperson Grace Norris said shortly after 6:30 a.m. Sunday detectives remained on scene conducting interviews and processing the scene.

Early reports were that five people were hospitalized, according to Norris. She did not have an update on their conditions but said there have been no reports so far of any fatalities.

Norris says a large crowd was in the area at the south end of the dunes late Saturday night when the shooting occurred. The call to authorities came in just after midnight, according to Norris.

Norris says it is not known if there was more than one shooter but they do not believe the public is currently at risk.

The sheriff’s office has taken over the investigation from California State Parks.

The Oceano Dunes are closed and people are asked to avoid the area.

No other information was immediately available.
