Gas prices are dropping for the start of 2019.

According to AAA, gas prices are below $2 per gallon in nearly 20 percent of states, which is the lowest start to the New Year since 2016.

However, prices are significantly higher in California and on the Central Coast.

The statewide average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.35, according to AAA.

In San Luis Obispo County, the average is $3.51 for a gallon of regular gas. The average price was $3.72 just one month ago.

In Santa Barbara County, the current average is $3.41. One month ago, the average was $3.56.

Prices are expected to keep falling as demand dwindles after the busy holiday travel season.

At the same time, OPEC is expected to begin crude oil production cuts, though the effectiveness of those cuts won’t likely be known until later in the Spring.
