Gov. Newsom brings personal touch, fresh focus in 1st week

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has quickly jumped into governing the nation’s most populous state.

He’s bringing a different focus and a more personal touch to the office than did his predecessor, fellow Democrat Jerry Brown.

Newsom’s Monday inauguration was marked by the image of his 2-year-old son wandering on stage and into Newsom’s arms. On Thursday he spent nearly two hours discussing the state budget with reporters. He’s already been in two Twitter fights with President Donald Trump.

Kim Nalder, a government professor at the California State University, Sacramento, says Newsom has a more “interactive” style than Brown.

He’s more eagerly courting the Legislature and hinting at changes to some of Brown’s key projects such as high-speed rail.
