The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office identified the body found in Lopez Lake Tuesday afternoon.
Deputies say at approximately 4 p.m divers located the body of David G. Sanchez, 39, of Grover Beach in Lopez Lake.
On Sunday, Oct. 18, the Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a possible drowning at Lopez Lake in the area know as the Lopez Arm at around 3:40 p.m.
Witnesses on scene reported Sanchez going into the water to help a relative who appeared to be in distress. Deputies say that person who was reportedly in distress was able to get out of the water safely, but Sanchez went under water and did not come back up.
Divers from the Sheriff's Underwater Search and Recovery Team responded to the scene but were unable to locate Sanchez that day. The divers returned on Monday and Tuesday to search but their efforts were hampered by zero visibility conditions in the water. Tuesday evening divers located Sanchez in approximately 47 feet of water.
An autopsy is planned for this week to determine the exact manner and cause of death.
