The Arroyo Grande community celebrated the grand opening of the new Matthew Will Memorial Medical Center.

The 45,000 square foot facility was built by the Will family to honor their late son Matthew who lost his battle with cancer after turning 20. A memorial collage is placed in the first floor lobby celebrating his life and legacy.

Saturday’s event featured a variety of activities for patients and families from around the area.

“For patients like me who live in the Five Cities area, they’ll no longer have to go down to Santa Maria,” said cancer survivor Jo Ann Costa. “They’re still working. They can’t hardly get time off but then they have to have somebody to take them down there and bring them back. There’s a lot of time.”

The grand opening was a collaborative effort between the Arroyo Grande Community Hospital and Dignity Health Central Coast Facilities.
