One person has died in a vehicle crash near Arroyo Grande, officials said.

According to California Highway Patrol, a pickup crashed into a tree head-on along Carpenter Canyon Road and Noyes Road shortly after 7 p.m.

The vehicle caught fire and spread to nearby vegetation. A fire was extinguished by responding firefighters.

Witnesses who heard the crash told KSBY News they attempted to save the driver and the dog inside. Despite prying the door open, flames spread too quickly and caught nearby vegetation on fire. They tried to use fire extinguishers to put out the fire during the attempted rescue.

A CHP officer said the neighbors were “heroic” in their efforts to try and save the driver.

The identity of the driver was not released Sunday night. Traffic was reduced to one lane.

Emergency officials ask drivers steer clear from the area as they investigate.
